How to Create a Red Herring?

I have what I hope is an easy question to answer. I'm test driving Twine right now and loving it so far, but I'm hoping there's some way to create a red herring or "false" option? I'm looking for something where the reader/players clicks on an option, and gets a brief descriptive text, then with another click goes back to the previous screen/choice/box/what-have-you. I'd use this set up false choices and also provide extra detail on important objects/characters.

As a quick example, I'm looking for something like:

A wild orc attacks you!
Fight the orc
Run from the orc
Examine the orc

Selecting "examining the orc" would give the character an in-depth description of the orc. They would then return to the previous scene. Ideally I'd like the "examine the orc" option removed at this point, but since I'm just starting out I'm willing to sacrifice that if it's too complicated.

  • set a variable to true when you examine it, only show the option if the value is false. Initialize the variable before you get to the battle passage.
