Twine Edit not working on OSX

edited January 2014 in Help! with 1.x
So, I'm usually use twee, but I wanted to see about redoing my game, because the number of branches got way out of hand, and rather than drawing it out in a charting program, I thought I could use Twine to do the layout. But, when I download the current version for mac, it doesn't work. As best as I can tell, when I edit a passage, the screen associated with that edit remains hidden until I quit, at which point, it is shown along with the dialog that asks me if I'd like to save. I've tried moving the main screen around, but the edit passage is simply not visible to me.

I see a post by someone else who uses mac, so I'm clearly not the only one trying, but I don't know if anyone else is unable to actually use the program. Unfortunately, when I opened up twine 1.4, it blew away my old twine settings, and now the older version I downloaded some time ago simply refuses to open. Any thoughts?

--Edit: I just found an old version of Twine 1.4 from 12/10/2013 and runs fine. So, something got broken in the newest version for the mac, it looks like.

  • I can't verify this bug. Could you explain any steps you can take to replicate this bug?
  • Except an annoying keyboard bug when it comes to entering special characters using the option key, Twine runs fine for me.

Well, there isn't much to replicate. Download the twine version from yesterday (I didn't check to see if it was updated). Extract it. Click on the Start passage and nothing happens except that the menu bar changes. If you start typing, the title will change, but you never see the form that you are editing. When you close, the save dialog appears along with the edit form (it is just beneath the save dialog).

    My OS is 10.8.5

I do use "spaces", and it's possible I was starting Twine on something other than the first space, but the version I downloaded a month or so ago doesn't have this problem, so I doubt it's the spaces.
  • I am using the 1.4 from twinery.org, it's from 10. Dec. 2013 and runs fine on Mavericks.

Where did you the other versions from?
  • It was downloaded from the main site.
  • I also have this bug.
I open Twine 1.4.1, then try to open any passages and the passage edit windows don't appears. I'm running Mac OSX 10.9.1 (Mavericks)

I did find a workaround: If you click the Twine icon in the dock, all the passage windows that you opened but were invisible will appear. Then you can work normally.

So, if you have this issue, just click the Twine icon in the dock.
  • I occasionally have the same problem (and solution) as mignon and narF, but on OSX 10.7.5. It sometime happens if I try to start a new story, too. The original window frame turns "grayed out" and is unresponsive, but the new story is behind it, completely covered. Same for opening the edit window, sometimes. Clicking on the Twine icon in the dock will refocus the original window, allowing you to move it out of the way to reveal the new story or edit window.
  • Yes, exactly. Having played a little more with Twine1.4.1 (like 1 hour maybe), I can say I also got all these issues mentioned by Strangelander.

I don't have repro steps, as I havent used twine enough recently (it doesn't do what I want it to do, which is to StoryIncludes twee files. See http://twinery.org/forum/index.php/topic,1464.0.html)
  • I'm having this exact same problem with 1.4.2 running in Mountain Lion. When I double click on a passage or stylesheet, no dialog box opens. I just posted about this in another thread because the wording used here didn't come up in my search. I'll try the workaround, but I'd sure like a solution.
  • Ditto, same issue here.
  • I reinstalled with no change, then deleted, redownloaded and installed again and it finally started working. Not sure what changed!
  • Same problem on OSX 10.8.5 :-/
  • Ok, a little work around is to open a second story and click on the Twine icon. Then both stories should appear on the screen. Now Twine is much more responsive and for me it works. But that problem about the responsiveness should be fixed.

edit: Clicking on the icon is enough for me. No need for a second story to be open. After that Twine works responsive.
