Twine 1.4.2 Lag

edited December 2014 in Help! with 1.x
I'm a ways into the story I'm making (stats below) and Twine is suddenly really bogged down. It's weird. I have an i7 processor with 16 gigs of ram and a 660 TI as my graphics card, so that shouldn't be an issue. No other programs are having this issue. If I have the story in question open make a new story, the new story doesn't lag (even with both open). The stats of the story are as follows.

71,534 characters
12,831 words
101 passages
129 links
0 broken links
16 variables used

I'd rather keep this all in one story, so that i don't have to fuse them. Any idea on what could be causing all this? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks. I should add, test playing the story works fine. I'm talking about the performance while editing it. Also, only a quarter of my ram is being used. Also, there isn't any complex java scripts or anything like that. Just pictures and text. Also, I tried deleting parts of the story, but that didn't help either until I'd removed a good chunk of it. I wanted to see if a specific passage had caused it.

  • The main thing that slows the Twine GUI down is redrawing the Passage Map. Because of the way it is currently designed it is constantly trying to determine which passages and arrows to show, and if there are images then it also needs to parse and render those image on the Map which also takes time.

A common way to improve the performance of a project with images is to store those images in a secondary TWS file which you include into your main TWS file using the StoryIncludes special passage.

Since the 1.4.2 version of the Twine GUI was created and released there have been changes to the source code that should somewhat improve the performance of the GUI but when the next version of GUI is to be release is unknown.
