Will Twine 1 stay around for much longer?

Seeing that the focus shifts to Twine 2.0 now even if it's not quite ready yet (hardly has all the features of Twine 1) kind of worries me. Will Twine 1 remain available at least until Twine 2.0 has all the features of Twine 1?

  • I cant speak for the Creators of Twine 1 but I can point out that it is an Open Source project on github.
So anyone with the right knowledge is able to generate their own copy of the application, even if the original creators choose to no longer make a copy of Twine 1 available.

Ah. That is true, certainly. I just assume that all the features of Twine 1 should be possible to implement in Twine 2. Image embedding, for example, seems very much possible, as well as syntax highlighting. Given that, Twine 1 should be declared "obsolete" at some point by the current dev team, I suppose. I just hope there are no plans to do that before Twine 2 becomes fully functional.

I don't believe that actual Image Embedding, like it is done in Twine 1, will ever be a part of Twine 2 because of the limited default size of the browser's local storage (5 - 10 MB).
What is planned though is to add functionality to the GUI so that it will help you add/edit the HTML <img> tags you use to reference your externally stored images/resources.

    as well as syntax highlighting

There are also plans to use the third-party text editor which is currently used to edit your projects stylesheet and javascript to also edit your passsages. This will allow the developers of the Story Formats (or other coders) to implement the relevant syntax highlighting for their own story format.

Ah. This would also work pretty well, although you would need to find a place to keep your images. Wouldn't it be possible to convert the stored external images to data URLs when you publish the final html file, though? I'm not entirely sure.

Yes, it would be possible but I personally would suggest that the feature be optional because:

    a. the overall story file size will increase dramatically and if the game is not supplied in a downloadable local version could take a while to render when first opened remotely.
    b. the browser cache is good at handling the loading (and possible downloading if hosted) of images.
    c. If an image it changed, you only need to download it and not the whole story file again.
