Upgrading from Sugarcube 1.x to Sugarcube 2.x - What do I need to know?

So it's come to my attention that I might want to use Sugarcube 2 rather than Sugarcube 1 as my story format (I've mostly been using 1.0.34 because it was included with Twine 2), and I wanted to ask super quick - will changing to the Sugarcube 2 story format break anything from the Sugarcube 1 format, or are the two Sugarcubes mostly the same save for a few differences?

The differences are significant internally, less so externally. The real question is whether that means anything to you, which would depend on whether or not you use any of the external bits that changed.

At SugarCube 2's website the there are instructions for upgrading from previous releases.

That said, SugarCube v2 is significantly better than v1 overall, so I do recommend upgrading, regardless—it pains me that people are still using v1.
  • Alright, thanks for clearing that up! I'm still pretty early in my story and I haven't done a lot of in-depth stuff, but I just wanted to make sure that some of the special passages I've been using haven't been broken, and it looks like I'm safe!

And yeah, honestly the only reason I'd been using Sugarcube 1 was because that was what came with Twine 2 and I never thought to look for a more up-to-date version until just now, haha.
  • I would upgrade, especially if there are performance improvements, but I'm scared of breaking my entire story since there is so much custom css.
